ACCIDENTS

MAN KILLED BY TRAIN. [Fer Press Association] WELLINGTON, July 28. Mr John Hepburn, a married man, aged 61, of Oxford Street, Ashburton, was run over and killed by a train at Levin, at 82C p.m on Saturday. Mr Hepburn, who was a passenger on a train from Wellington to Palmerston North, is thought to have been standing on the platform of a railway carriage, and to have slipped ana fallen on to the tracks. Hi s body was found on the line 300 yards from the Levin railway station. Mr Hepburn attended his brother s funeral in Wellington on Saturday afternoon, and ’is understood to have travelled further’ north to see his sons, one of whom is at the Air Force station at Levin, the other. Mr J. W; Hepburn, being deputy-superintend-ent of th e Palmerston North „ Fire Brigade. Mr Hepburn formerly belonged to the Volunteer Fire Brigade, and the Volunteer Rifles. CAR HITS POLE. AUCKLAND, July 28. The driver of a small roadster car was fatally injured when it ran ’m.« xi telegraph pole in Epsom on Saturday afternoon. The victim was tisvor Arthur Howard Kidd, insurance salesman, single, aged 21. A passengei- in the car, Donala Francis Ceder.wall, was not injurea. Kidd _ suffered severe head injuries, and died in an ambulance on the way to hospital. The car was extensively damaged. MAN BURNED. CHRISTCHURCH. Julv 29. A voting man, Robert Lock, of JNTetfiVen, was admitted to the Chris vcnurch Hospital yesterday mornmsuffering from burns to his face ana eyes. The cause of the injuries is no definitely known. Lock .suffered tne burns on Saturday morning, apparently at Methven, and was treated tag Ashburton Hospital, later, his burns appearing to have been caused by an explosive. He was transferred to Christchurch for treatment yesterday and his condition last night was reported to satisfactory. .
