WHOSE SHOUT?

[To the Editor.]

Sir—l noticed in your paper a few days ago that hotel-keepers are taking a stand in the future of “no drinks on the house.” Well Sir, even before this declaration, shouting was rather infrequent, so why should one woiry? What is more to the point is that there should be a twelve, instead ot a ten-ounce glass of beer, and not all provide it. What I cannot undei> ■ stand is why beer-selling does not i come under the Weights and Measures A.ct, say at so much for a pint (stamped imperial measure) and half this cost is half a pint is required and so on, as with bread, meat, coal, milk, etc. This has been the custom m ; England for years. Yes, generations. ; and I think that it should be here. and that th e Government see that it iis While lam on the subject I would , like to draw attention to the strength, and quality of beer on sale. Some iis most unpalateable, “fiat” right i 1 from the start, and then as “heavy as I lead” when it is absorbed. I must ai-i mit that this is a matter of taste concerning which there is no room, for disputing—as those who know good beer can go where they Hunk

they can get it. Speaking of Reefton, .this is illustrated quite well, as the hotels where the beer is best have the trade that is best. There is some beer, however, that could be of great aid in the Dominion and the Empire in the war effort. It shou.d be used to fill bombs intended for Germany and Italy, and dropped thereon. I give this contribution fiee, gratis and for nothing to the war effort. Some of this beer is the surest thing on earth to put. a quick end to the war without any argument if the enemy were brought into close contact with it. They would retreat to Moscow the moment a, splash went their way. I would, ask every brewery to brew true beer, malt beer, and every hotel to sei' oy measure, and to Jericho with shouting where it does continue. I am, etc., DRINKER- OF DINKUM BEER. Reefton, July 26.
