LEAGUE FOOTBALL

CHRISTCHURCH GAMES. CHRISTCHURCH, April 13. Friendly Rugby League matches were played by city clubs this afternoon as a prelude to ..the opening of the competitions next Saturday. Only five teams turned out, Hornby and Waimairi being unable to field teams through enlistment losises. It is probable that Hornby will lose its senior side. Rakaia had a bye. ) At Linwood Park Sydenham fielded a strong team against Linwood, who had only three of last season’s seniors playing. Linwood, however, put up a good showing in spite of their defeat by 34 points to 18, and have good, youthful material to develop. Sydenham’s strong back line was the deciding factor, and is almost unchanged from last season. At Riccarton, Addington, who, like Linwood, have lost a big proportion of their senior men, were beaten in a good game by Riccarton ‘by 24 points to 16. Addington uesd their heavier, experienced backs to good advantage, but the Riccarton backs carried too much dash for their opponents.
