N.Z. TOURNEY 400 Giris Compete [Per Press Association J. WELLINGTON, March 24. Some 400 girls from ail parts ol New Zealand are taking part in tn° New Zealand Centennial basketball tournament, which commenced at Wellington on Saturday under ideal weather conditions. k Twenty-two senior and twelve school teams arc competing, and Saturday’s standard of play was surprisingly high, considering the fact that the tournament is taking place so early in the season. Two surprises wore recorded during! the afternoon in the defeat of Wellington (co-holders of the sen.or trophy with Auckland) by tile Hawke’s Bay team, and also the defeat of Waikato (holders of the secund grade trophy) by Ashburton. The tournament was officially opened by the Mayoress, Mrs T. C. A. Hislop, and the visiting players were welcomed to Wellington by Miss O. Wharton (president of the Wellington Association). Thereafter a spectacular parade of participating teams was held. Results were: —
