REBUKE A FORMALITY

U.S.A. MINISTER IN CANADA. RECENT PARTIZAN SPEECH. (Received March 24, 7.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, March 24. Both Mr Cromwell (U.S.A. Minister to Canada), and White House have denied newspaper stories as to the rebuke of Mr Cromwell for his speech in Canada last Tuesday, attacking the attitude of the members of Congress, who are for an isolationist policy in regard to the European War. Mr Roosevelt saw Mr Cromwell’s speech on Monday last, before its de livery. Nevertheless, there is reason to believe that Mr Roosevelt fully agrees with Mr Cromwell’s sentiments. The “New York Times” editorially says: “Th'e sentiments wf Mr Cromwell are overwhelmingly the beliefs of Americans.” It added: “It is significant that the United States Secretary, Senator Cordell Hull rebuked Mr Cromwell, but it merely was for making his speech, and not for the contents of the speech.
