STOCKTON NOTES
[Our Own Correspondent]. The Stockton School children were taken to Mokihinui on Tuesday for a picnic. Although the weather did not look too promising in the early morning the sun came out later on and a very enjoyable time was spent by all. The Stockton Buller Comforts Committee held the usual card tournament on Tuesday in the Stockton Hail. Messrs H. Fitzsimmons and A. Shearer won the first and second prizes respectively for the whist games. Mrs Geddes, Mrs J. Morgan and Mr D. Miller tied for the euchre prize. Mr D. Gemmell was injured in the mine on Tuesday whilst working on backshift. A fall of stone occurred, and Mr Gemmell suffered a shoulder injury and damage to his teeth. Dr. Simpson attended the patient on Wednesday morning. k The new post office is completed and it is expected that as soon as the building has been inspected by the Department official, it will be open to the public. The building is a real asset to the township and one that will be very much appreciated by the residents of Stockton.
Mr H. Evans, Mr C. Steele, Mr and Mrs J. Lavery and Master S. Lavery, also Miss M. Fox, all leave for Wellington on Thursday morning to pay a visit to the Exhibition.
Miss Cooper and Mr Anderson, both of Darfield, are spending a holiday with Mr and Mrs R. Butterfield. Mr and Mrs J. Jose left Stockton for Wellington on Tuesday morning, and will visit their daughter, Miss J. Jose, who resides in Wellington.
A welcome home was held in the Stockton Hall on Friday evening to commemorate the arrival of Mr R. Johnstone, who will be leaving with the Second Echelon of the New Zealand Forces. The function was organised by the Stockton branch of the Women’s Institute. Mr R. F. Thomson presided over a large attendance. The chairman presented Mr Johnstone with a gold wristlet watch. Mr Bert Finlayson presided at the piano, and Mr D. Rees acted as M.C. Dancing continued till the early hours of the morning and a very enjoyable time was spent by all.
Mr J. Cocoran has resumed work for the Westport-Stockton Coal Company.
Mr A. McCabe, junr., is home on leave, prior to departure with the Second Echelon of the New Zealand Forces. The mine continues to work the full complement of shifts per fortnight.
Seaman Keith Connew left Westport by plane for Nelson on Tuesday morning. Seaman Connew is rejoining the Achilles at Auckland during the next few days. Mr G. Jones left on Saturday on a visit to Australia. Mr Jones will travel fro mWellington on the Awatea and will be away approximately four weeks. Mr Albert Harris has resumed, work
in the mine after being on the injured list for a short time. Mr J. Chippendale returned 1.0 Stockton on Monday after spending a short holiday in Christchurch. Mr and Mrs H. Campbell, Mr H. Campbell junr. and Miss J. Campbell, were visitors to the Westport races on Monday. A ballot for three trustees of the Stockton Medical Association was conducted on Tuesday and Wednesday. Both the presidency and secretaryship were uncontested, as the present president and secretary were returned unopposed. The rules of the Stockton Sick Fund will shortly be forwarded to the Registrar of Friendly Societies for registration. When these rules are approved of, the members will be able to receive the benefits prescribed by the Social Security Act. Hitherto, this has not been possible, due to the fact that the Sicx Fund was not registered under the Friendly Societies’ Act.
