HOGAN WINS U.S.A. CONTEST. (Received March 22. 9.30 p-m. >’ MELBOURNE, March 22. A message from Pinehurst, North Carolina. U.S.A., states that the Sycvney golfer, Jim Ferrier, in the third and fourth rounds returned cards of 76 and 75, making his aggregate 305. He finished thirty-eighth in a field o: sixty. Hogan won the contest with 27?. This is a course record. Sneal did 280. Byron-Nelson 286, Revolta 287, and Sarazen 288. Ferrier was impatient _ at the Americans’ deliberate shooting, which requires four hours for eighteen holes. Ferrier played his final round alone in two hours. He is not eligible for amateur tournaments, because he does not belong to anv amateur association or country ci'ub. He next plays at Greensbourne on March 23. SOUTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIP. DUNEDIN. March 22. The South Island Golf Championship was opened at Baimacewan today in a strong wind. Thirty-two qualified, the holder, h>, V. Wright being fourteenth, and the Otago champion. T. W. Wight, leu the field with <m aggregate of 149.
