LONDON, March IS. In the House of Commons the Government was requested to give a leacj, Lo retailers of clothing materials because the whole emphasis in women s ■fashions is being placed on wool, the retailers organising a wool week. The Minister for Supply (Mr E. L. Burgin) said the restriction of home demand was constantly under consideration but different issues were raised for different trades. He did not .doubt that the manufacturers and retailers of woollen clothing were aware of the position of supplies and adjusting their programmes accordingly. Miss Ellen Wilkinson suggested that it was impossible to curtail luxury expenditure drastically unless the Government fave a clear lead. Mr Burgin said: “My responsibility is raw wool, not the use of it after it has left the controller’s hands. About half the requirements of the home trade are met. I should have thought that this was a drastic cut in luxury expenditure. If a further cut is necessary I will unhesitatingly cut.” TIMARU, March 19.
