N.Z. DEFENCE

SCIENTIFIC CO-ORDINATION. WELLINGTON, March 18. The appointment of a scientific advisory committee to co-ordinatej the uses of the scientific .resources of the country in their relation to the problems of defence was announced to-night by the Minister for Defence (the Hon. F. Jones). The committee will consider, as 1 they arise, scientific problems affectling the armed services, and whereever possible will assist in the provision and design of scientific equipment which may be l required for the forces. Various scientific officers of the Government will be available co-operate with the committee on special problems. Initially the committee will consist of: —-

Dr. J. C. Andrews,, chemical engineer and manager of ' HeLabys' Ltd., Auckland.

Professor P. W. Burbridge, of the Faculty of Physics, Auckland. Professor H. G. Denham, of tho Faculty of Physical Chemistry. Christchurch.

Professor F. G. Soper, of Faculty of Organic Chemistry, Dunedin.

Professor F. W. G. White, of R-e Faculty of Physics, Christchurch. These members will assist Dr. E Marsden, secretary of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, who is devoting a portion o.' his time as scientific adviser to the armed services.

“All these men.” said Mr Jones, “have full knowledge in their own particular fields of New Z-a andk scientific resources, and considerable benefit will undoubtedly be gained by using their services in this way Liaison has already been established with the appropriate scientific auib orities in other parts of the Commonwealth, and every effort is being made to bring the aid of science to the services of our war effort.”
