TIMARU AIRPORT
DELAYS IN COMPLETION. TIMARU, March 18. 1 Delay in the opening of the Timaru airport was discussed at a meeting of the Timaru Borough Council. A letter received from the Hon. R. Semple, Minister for Public Works, in reply to the council’s letter urging completion of the airport, said that he was looking into the matter and would communicate with the council as soon as possible. Cr. W. H. Hall reported that he had interviewed Mr J. Wood, Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department, and an endeavour would be made to borrow the necessary gypsum from New Zealand cement companies, i to be replaced when Australian un-i ports, were received. I Cr. J. R. Hart said that the dry autumn was unfortunate, as if the soil had had a little moisture the airport would soon be going well. The Mayor (Mr W. G. Tweedy) said that the matter was one of great urgency and had caused the council great disappointment for some years, but the only thing to be done was to keep reminding the Public Works Department. It was to be hoped that the grass would still be sown before autumn. , Cr. H. J. Mathers mentioned that there was still no sign of the arrival of the permanent pumping plant for stopping flooding of the airport m winter. Th e present pump was quite inadequate for the purpose.
