HASTINGS, March 19
Hastings Centennial week celebrations concluded last evening, with a grand inter-house sports meeting on Nelson Park, in which sixteen teams of girls took part. About 2000 people were present. It is expected that the profit from the week will amount to approximately £l3OO, which goes toward the erection of a Centennial memorial at Waipatu, in the form of a Maori meeting house. WAIROA, March 19. Damage estimated at some hundreds of pounds was caused by a firs which broke out in a workshop at the rear of a block of business premises in Wairoa, early th ; s morning. Thworkshop, which was a large corrugated iron building, was totally destroyed, together with stock valued at about £l5O. Mrs McGregor, proprietress of a library and confectionery store nearby, had a narrow escape. She Jives at the back of the shop, with her daughter, and: they awoke with the, room filled with smoke. They were! rescued, but Mrs McGregor was overcome) by fumes, and had to be admitted to the hospital.
