NO BUILDING PERMIT
FINE IMPOSED. Reserved judgment in the case in which Samuel Stewart (Mr. W. D. Taylor), was charged with adding to a building in Alexander Street without first obtaining a permit from the Greymouth Borough Council, was delivered by Mr. G. G. Chisholm, S.M. who fined Stewart £2 with 10s costs and £1 Is Od solicitor’s fee. The Magistrate said that he agreed with counsel for the defendant that the Council was probably bound to issue the permit, but defendant had elected to go ahead with the building without obtaining the permit and from the point of view of the local body, no doubt there was a question of principle involved. He (the Magistrate) felt that he could miss the information as trivial, on that account, and he thought that the position would.be met if he convicted defendant and fined him. Mr. C. R. McGinley, who appeared I for the informant, the Borough En-1 gi.neer. (Mr. A. J. Fairmaid!), asked; that the Magistrate should, treat the I matter as a continuing offence, but' his Worship declined to alter the penalty. MAYOR’S COMMENT. The Mayor (Mr..„.F, A. Ritchmghaih), said yesterday that ~by-Jaws! were nbw under consideration which would considerably . strengthen the Borough Council’s Hand in dealing with matters of this sort.
