REVENUE AND BENEFITS. Substantial decreases in the revenue and outward payments of the Social Security Fund were recorded during January, compared with December, 1939, according to the latest issue of the Monthly Abstract of Statistics. Revenue totalled £511,985, against £658,700, while the payment of benefits was lower under all headings, with the exception of maternity benefits, which increased by £6,384 to £36 314. For the 10 months ended January 31, revenue collected totalled £7,880,409. Revenue during January was made up as follows: Registration fees, £8,645; charge on salaries find wages, £455,757; charge on company income, £15,420; charge on other income, £29,774; penalties, £1,735; miscellaneous, £654. The main headings showing payments in January for social security benefits were:—Age, £542,081; hospital, £78,517; invalidity, £75,048; widows, £64,159; mental hospital, £41,500; maternity, £36,314; family, £22,122. Unemployment benefits numbered 4,200 and £26,850 was paid in four weeks of January, compared with 5,042 benefits and a total payment of £34,559 in five weeks ended December 30. Sickness benefits totalled 2,574 in four weeks of January and involved a payment of £17,651, the corresponding figures for five weeks ended December 30 being 2,852 and £26,618.
