Notes on the Racing

AN OVERDUE SUCCESS. I Our Own Coi respondent? WESTPORT, March 18. Philibun as on Saturday, tried to win all the way in the Flying Handicap, but Miss Ttista, which was always well placed, came away nicely in the straight to win by half a length, with New Note, which was knocked back soon after the start, a good third. The last-named was unlucky, but probably had no show with the winner i n any case. Improvident failed to show any dash at the finish, and Hostis missed the jump-out. DERBYSHIRE’S DOUBLE. Derbyshire came on well in a stir- | ring finish to beat the two-year-old filly, Rosa Derby, in the Denniston Trot, with Travis Pringle, which went another good race, a fair third ahead of Mona Palm and True Pronto. Mona Palm showed great dash at the home "bend, but broke badly to lose her position. Lady Adventure and Rivette were prominent early, but did not come on in the later stages. CYMRIC FAILS BADLY. Cymric, a good favourite in the Morley Handicap, failed badiy, after having every chance. Skyrena made the running until the straight entrance,,, where she gave way to Mishna and Studley Royal, which fought out a great finish, Mishna winning by threequarters of a length, with Studley Royal half a length in front of Skyrena. Cymric was fourth, and Rebel Chief last. Studley Royal made up a lot of ground in the last two furlongs, but had no chance of beating Mishna, who raced up to his best form. He won this same event last year. COPYIST’S REPEAT ORDER. Epic and Lifeguard made the running in the Grandstand Handicap from Copyist, Gemara and Land Raid. Copyist came to hold off Epic, which finished well and Landraid, which made a good run from the rear of the field. Lifeguard again disappointed and Gemara weakened at the finish. A DESERVING VICTORY. Mona Palm made no race of the Waimangaroa Trot. She took the lead at the half-way mark, after Worthy Pointer had made the running to that stage ahead of Rivette and the winner. Derbyshire made up ground gradually to get within three lengths of the winner. Echelon was a poor fourth. STUDLEY ROYAL’S SOLID EFFORT Rebel Chief, the second favourite, seemed to have the Roche Memorial Handicap won 100 yards from home when Studiey Royal, the first choice working his way from the rear of the field, came' with a rattle to win com-

fortably by a length. Gay Rebel finished on better than Lady Magellan the early leader, to get the initior stake. Potent was never dangerous. DOUBLE TO ESPERANCE BAY. In the Charleston handicap, Esperance Bay took the field on at the home bend, to score a meritorious win from the local mare Bonny Agnes wYlich beat the rest as easily as Esperance Bay beat her. La' Plata went a good race for third and Rebel Rose did well to get fourth. Jed Forrest had every chance and could get no xqoser than fifth, while Prediction and Shangri La were disappointing. LIFEGUARD MAKES AMENDS. The Farewell Handicap saw Lifeguard make amends for his three earlier failures at the meeting. Philibun, Copyist, Land’Raid and Improvident were well placed early, but in the straight Land Raid went to the front, and just failed to withstand a strong challenge by Lifeguard. Copyist held on for third place ahead of Philibun and Epic.
