GREY MAIN SCHOOL
MONTHLY MEETING. Mr. G. Batty (chairman) presided over th a following members at the monthly meeting of the Greymouth Main School Committee last evening: Messrs J. W. Greenslade, H. Smith, J. L. Patterson, A. Daiziel and C. F. Shapcott (secretary). A.pologies were received from Messrs R. R. Dawber, W- Williams and R. Clark.
The Education Board advised Jhat box drains would be provided, for discharge into Sawyer’s Creek. The appointment of Miss M. M. Carroll, of Blaketown, as assistant, was approved. Mr. A. H. McCarthy, a former pupil of the school, wrote thanking the committee for its congratulations on his appointment as Judge of the Native Land Court at Raratonga. The Education Board advised that a grant of £5 for the furnishing of the staff-room -would be made. The Secretary reported that the cost would be about £22. The: Home and School Association would probably donate £5. It was decided to hold the matter over until later. The annual accounts, showing a credit balance of £53/11/7, was presented by the Secretary and approved. Accounts amounting to £l7/6/6 were passed for payment. Messrs Greenslade and Clark were appointed to the Visiting Committee for the ensuing month. The Headmaster (Mr. J. Graham) reported: Roil number, 273 boys; 243 girls; total, 516; average attendance, 255 boys, 223 girls; total, 478. The probationary assistants for 1940 are Mr. T. Judkins, Misses J. Reedy and S. Nicholson. The latter, after six weeks’ sick leave, reported on Wednesday. Mr. J. Douglas is the additional assistant for the year. Miss B. Tucker is at present relieving in Miss Coumbe’s position. In Standard 3, the heater takes up too much floor space, and would be more serviceable in the front of the room. The walls bf Standard 3B room, the oldest detached class-room, require renovating. A reliable clock is urgently needed in the school. The report was adopted, and the Secretary was instructed to endeavour to secure a clock. The other matters, renovation and removal' of the heater, were referred to the Board. After hearing a report from the Secretary, it was decided to procure a; number of patriotic and marching re- i cords for use with the radio-gramo-phone.
