HARBOUR COLLISION
Sydney Inquiry U.S.S. COY. CAPTAIN’S EVIDENCE I Aus. Ar N.Z. Cable Assn. ] (Received March 15, 12.48 a.m.) SYDNEY, March 14. An inquiry was opened to-day intc the collision between the Blue Star liner and the Union Steamship Company freighter on March S. William Henry Gardner, master of the freighter, gave evidence that h’s ship was doing about three and a-half knots, and passing under the Harbour Bridge. He observed the dim mast lights of another vessel ahead. Thereupon he twice blew his whistle and ordered full speed astern. Then he saw the Blue Star liner 320 feet ahead, when it was swinging rapidly. The liner also gave blasts of its whistle. At the time of the impact, the freighter was reversing, while the liner was moving at a good speed Captain Gardner admitted that he had no officer on watch at the time of the accident.
The Court adjourned. It ♦.vill examine the. damaged ships to-morrow.
