Italy’s Defences ROME. March 13. General Übaldo Soddu, Under-Sec-retary for War, told the Fascist Chamber that Italy was ready to defend its liberty of action with 1,000,000 trained men under arms, and a fortified bulwark across the Alpine frontiers. He said: The Italian fortifications are not artificial, like the Maginot and Siegfried Lines, but a strengthening of natural obstacles. This fortification was recommended some time ago, to be carried out on all frontiers. German Hope THAT TURKEY WILL BE SCARED BY SOVIET. BERLIN, March 13. The “National Zeitung” states: Britain and France have suffered a defeat of such enormous proportions that it is possible only vaguely to conceive the consequences. The Soviet has given such a demonstration of readiness for peace that one will watch with justifiable interest whether the Russian-Turkish traditional friendship will be resumed. Soviet and Roumania PACT NEGOTIATIONS AT BERLIN. (Received March 14, 9 p.m.) BUCHAREST, March 14. There is a Roumanian delegation, including high Army officers, on a visit at present to Berlin, where plans for a Russian-Roumanian non-aggres-sion pact are reported to be under consideration. —
