"IRON LUNG” USED
UNSUCCESSFUL EFFORT. [Per Press Association.] HASTINGS, March 12. Use was made of Viscount Nuffield’s presentation “iron lung” in an effort to revive an apparently drowned. woman at the Napier Hospital. The effort, however, was unsuccessful, as the woman, Mrs Rose Rossiter, laged 73, of Napier, was apparently beyond human aid when she was placed in the apparatus. Mrs Rossiter went to the Napier ' Municipal Baths shortly before one o’clock in the afternon to have a hot seawater bath and when she had been in. the cubicle for about 10 minutes she stated, in response to an attendant’s inquiry, that she was all right. Shortly afterwards a further inquiry was made and on there being no response she was found lying unconscious face downwards in lOin of water in the bath. The attendants and a doctor carried out immediate artificial respiration without avail. Mrs Rossiter was then taken to the Napier Hospital, where the “iron lung” was used for .the, first time. Although it functioned efficiently the woman was not revived.
