COAL STRIKE
Position in Australia NO SIGN OF SETTLEMENT [Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn.] (Received March 13, 11 p.m.) SYDNEY, March 13. The Australian general strike is daily becoming worse. There is. no immediate prospect of a settlement. The small group of mines in the Rothbury district, near Maitland, which are being worked by non-union labour, are not yet idle. They are producing ten thousand tons of coal weekly. ! The men at these mines may yet be coerced into joining the strike by reason of threats which are now emanating from the strikers against the miners who are employed at those pits. Reports from Brisbane state that the Mount Isa mines will become idle at the week-end, when their coal supplies give out, thus throwing 1400 men out of employment, and also indirectly affecting 5000 others. SUPPORT FOR STRIKERS. (Received March 14, 1.10 a.m.) MELBOURNE, March 13. In connection with the coal strike, the Executive of the Australian Council of Trades’ Unions has pledged to the strikers its co-operation and financial assistance by means of a weekly levy on all Unionists.
