KUMARA NOTES
BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING. I From Our Own Correspondent] The monthly meeting of the Kumara Borough Council was attended by the Mayor (Mr A. B. Spiers), Crs. Murphy, Little, McLean, Wise, ana Lawrence. The Secretary of the Westland Hospital Board wrote, asking for particulars of property rated in Kumara and it was resolved that the required data be forwarded. The Mayor reported that he had discussed with Mr P. C. Webb, Minister of Mmes, and Mr J. O’Brien, M.P., tho recent collapse of the tunnel at Dillmans, and both had promised to do what they could to have the water Restored to the town. The Mayor also reported that he had attended a meeting held in Greymouth, at which the sawmillers operating on the north side of the Teramakau River, were present, as was also the District Engineer, to discuss the bridge reconstruction. After discussion, in which the millers were unanimous in urging that the bridge be repaired, it was decided to proceed with the work at once, putting in 40foot spans. It was estimated the work would be completed in eight weeks. It was decided that the Town Clerk communicate with the teachers,of the State and Convent schools, pointingout the danger of children using the footways for cycling and ?.sk ng then co-operation in warning the pupus against the practice. It was decided that Westland Power Ltd. be written to regarding th’ unsatisfactorv state of the street lighting, which had not been on for seven 'consecutive nights, and that a reduction in the account be requested; a. 1 so that application again be made, to have an extra light installed in Tui Street, and that the clock regulating the town lights be removed from the office.
The balance-sheet for the year 1939 was received from the Audit Office, 'duly certified. The balance-sheet was I adopted. Accounts amounting to £391 15s 5d I were passed for payment. It was resolved that the Council representing the people of Kumara ; and district, protest to the Westland Hospital Board against disposing of the doctor’s house in Kumara, poTm■ing out that it would be useless to endeavour to get a doctor, without a ■residence. »■ I Complaints were received regarding damage done by wandering horses land other stock in the town, and it /was resolved that the owners be notified that unless the nuisance was stopped, drastic action would be taken without further notice
