DENNISTON NOTES

[From Our Own Correspondent] Mr R. Roper of Burnett’s Face, is visiting Wellington. Mr George Pullar, storekeeper, has returned fro ma,..business visit to Christchurch. Mr W. Wearne, of Denniston, is visiting the Centennial Exhibition. Mr M. Clarke has resumed work, having recovered from an injury received whilst employed in the tubrepair shop at Denniston. Mrs Blake, who, accompanied by her son and daughter had been spending a holiday with Mrs W. Boyd at Denniston, has left on return to Picton. Mr Tony Prebble, who has been on a visit to Mrs B. Sherlock, has left for Nelson. Mr Tom Lawson, who met with injuries whilst ,'employed as a shotfirer in the Forsyth’s Section of the Coalbrookdale mine, has now practically recovered. Mr and Mrs Hunter, who have been the guests of Mrs Sherlock, at Denniston, have left on return to their home at Dunedin. Mr Syd Kelly, who met with a serious accident whilst employed as a miner in the Iron Bridge mine, has been receiving treatment at the Bullei* Hospital. He has now sufficiently recovered to return to his home at Denniston. Dr. J. Sutherland, Medical Officer to the Denniston Medical Association and Superintendent of the Denniston Hospital, was taken seriously ill, and removed to the Buller Hospital, where he is still a patient. His many friends wish him a speedy recovery to normal health. Arrangements have been made for Dr. Harkness, of Millerton, to temporarily take over the duties of Dr. Sutherland at Denniston.

Mr W. Lightboun, of Coalbrookdale who has been off work for several weeks with an injured foot, has entered Westport Hospital for further treatment.

Mr Duggan, Chief Inspector ol Mines, paid an official inspection of the Denniston mines recently. Mr and Mrs Adamson, of Denniston, have returned from their annual holidays, spent at Wellington. Mr O. Archer, of Denniston, is spending a holiday at Wanganui. The Denniston mines are working steadily. The Iron Bridge mine had to knock off early on one day owing to a mechanical fault. Three headings have been double shifted in development work on a new seam, and have necessitated the installation of an auxiliary fan for that section. One of the headings has faulted and the two pair of miners engaged have been shifted to Birchall’s Section, they not being sorry. The road to the bathhouse is being put into order to carry the company’s workers’ buses. How many will avail themselves of the facilities of the bath-house is problematical, as it will lengthen the day considerably for many. The official opening of the bath-house is not far distant, and the position will have to be discussed, before the existing time-table is altered.

Many disputes and claims were discussed by the management of the Miners’ Union Executive recently, and a report of the management’s decisions will be given at the next Union meeting. Many remits from the Denniston Miners’ Union have been forwarded to the Buller Central Committee for discussion and to be forwarded to the National Executive foi the wages conference. At the last Union meeting it was agreed to send Mr D. Hayward to the Labour Party Conference.

The Miners’ Union Executive has decided, on information received, to discontinue the Spanish and Chinese levies now being collected. The Labour Dailies contribution now collected is also concluding. As promised, the final payment is being sent forward to the National Secretary. The installation of a heating system for the Denniston picture hall is now in the lap of the gods, for, since the war started, prices have soared for- this type of work, even if it were possible to get a firm to instal a suitable plant. The Orange Hall was filled to capacity by well wishers to welcome home Mr and Mrs R. Curragh, of Toll’s Hotel, after their honeymoon, which was spent in the North Island. Music for dancing was supplied by- Blyth’s Orchestra, and Mr A. Shaw was M.C. An excellent supper was served. A lengthy list of vocal and musical items was well received and a happy gathering broke up with the singing of “For They Are Jolly Good Fellows” and “Auld Lang Syne.” Making a great start for the new season Hone Heke Club defeated St. Canice’s (Westport) on the Rec., the result being: Hone Heke 171, St. CanIce’s 19. In the bowling Smythe took 7 for 5. and Allott 3 for 12. St. Canice’s tendered thanks for an enjoyable game and a splendid afternoon tea. The town club will have a chance to turn the tables oh the Hill club when they get them down on the grass at' Westport. At Denniston Women’s Institute meeting, Mrs J. Philp presided over a good attendance. The roll call—- “ What I would do if I won Tatts”— was answered by all who enjoyed that vision. The motto, “Never trouble trouble till trouble troubles you,” was explained by Mrs W. Thomas. The golden thread talk, “The Life Story of Helen Keller,” was given by Mrs H. Baird. The monthly competition (rag mat), resulted: Mrs T. Blake special; Mrs Lewis 1; Mrs G. Hill 2. Supper was served by the hostesses.
