KUMARA CENTENNIAL

PROCESSION AND PICNIC. “An outstanding community effort’ might well be applied to the wonderful way in which the Centennial Celebrations were carried out. The Memorial Hall which was appropriately 7 decorated for the occasion was the place of assembly fo L the procession at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning. Numbers of fancy costumes, decorated lorries, motor cars, and cycles, prams, trcycles and wheelbarrows and the old 1884 manual fire engine seemed to arrive from all parts of the town, where the procession started to March round the block. Mr Little on horseback marshalled the procession and led along Main, Tui, Fifth, and Seddon Streets and then on to the hall prior to leaving for the racecourse where the picnic was held. The course Mr J. McLaughlin, secretary led a busy committee in carrying out a big programme of sporting events. The day being beautifully fine a pleasant day was spent. In the evening the committee treated the children to a picture entertainment. During the day numerous visitors arrived in cars from other towns and all expressed agreeable surprise at the fine decorations and celebrations generally..
