The Rata is expected from Wanganui to-morrow to load coal for New Plymouth and Wanganui. The Titoki is expected from Nelson to-morrow to load coal for Tarakohe. The Wingatui, coal laden for Wellington, is scheduled to sail to-mor-row morning, conditions permitting.. The Poolta, coal laden from Bluff, Dunedin, Port Chalmers and Lyttelton, is expected to be despatched tomorrow. The Totara is expected from Napier on Saturday, to load for Tokomaru Bay. The Waipahi is expected from Wellington about Friday to load coal for Napier. Personal: Messrs C. Collins, B. Feast and R. Ellison, of Christchurch, have been paying a short visit to Westport, as the guest of Mr A. Struthers. Westport Fire Brigade has elected Fireman T. Phibbs delegate to the conference at Petonfc

Miss Masel and Mr Jack Murphy, who have been visiting Westport tor the funeral of their late sister, Kathleen, left on return to Wellington today. " • Mr K. Bird, who has< been visiting Westport for the funeral of the late Miss Kathleen Murphy, left on return to Christchurch to-day. Mrs Peterson, who journeyed from Christchurch to attend the funeral of her niece, Miss Kathleen Murphy, is spending some time at Westport, as the guest of her brother, Mr Tom Murphy. Mr Marks, Public Service Commissioner, accompanied by Mr Miller, general secretary of the Public Service Association, were visitors to Westport yesterday,'and left this morning for Wellington, via Murchison and Nelson,

Lady Galway, accompanied by the members of her family, bound for Greymouth, spent Tuesday night at Westport and proceeded on their journey to-day. Mr Jack Caldwell was the guest at two gatherings of friends last evening. At the Hotel' Buller he was presented with a wallet of notes by Mr C. H. Thomas, after Mr J. Bird had proposed a toast in his honour. Among those present were Messrs P. Colvin, P. Thorpy, H. Moore, G. Munro, J. McEnaney, W. Craddock, S. A. Wingate, R. Powley, J. Bentley, T. Burley and J. Connelly. Mr A. Edwards presided at the piano. At the second gathering, on behalf of his sporting friends from the south end of the town, Mr Caldwell was presented with a token of their esteem by Mr “Pop” Taylor. Other speakers who joined with Mr Taylor in commenting on the recipient’s great record in. Buller sport, and wishing him a safe return from the war, included Messrs T. Brown, T. Douglas, J. Conneliy, J. Fox, S. Colton, J. Roberts, T. Laffey, W. Ryan, K. Brown and E. O’Callaghan. An additional enlistment for the Railway Construction Draft, which leaves Westport this morning for Burnham, is T. W. Cockerel).

Waterworks Inspected: The Mayor (Mr J. M. Robertson), accompanied by Mr C. F. Schadick, Borough Consulting Engineer, visited the waterworks yesterday and inspected the tunnels carrying the water from Giles Creek to the dams. No. 1 and 2 have collapsed in places, but a pipe was pushed through part of the debris enabling the water to come through, though a bit slowly into the dams. It was decided to cut a race round the hili', replacing the short No. 2 tunnel. Men will begin on this work this morning. Probably steps will be taken later on to pipe the No. 1 tunnel, so as to avoid possible recurrances of collapsing of the roof.

Costello’s Hill Slip: Men worked continuously, and aided by a bulldozer, cleared the slip at Costello’s Hill on the Coast road, to allow the passage of cars yesterday afternoon and last evening. The road has not yet been opened for continual use and will remain closed until the danger spot has been made reasonbly safe for traffic.
