COASTAL ROAD CLOSED
Till Further Notice BAD SLIP AT COSTELLO’S HILL. Constant slipping on ' a greasyback at Costello’s Hill on the Greymouth coastal highway, 14 miles south of Westport, has resulted in a decision by the Buller County Council to close the route until further notice. Heavy rains during the past week has caused constant slipping on the hill and the spot has for a long time been a source of . danger to traffic, and a worry to the authorities. A bulldozer was engaged in clearing the slip yesterday, but it was considered inadvisable to attempt , any further clearance in the meantime on account of the danger presented. In order to do away with this constant trouble, it . has been suggested in many quarters that a deviation be made through Cape Foulwind, which would permit of an even grade right) through to Westport, and cut out. the numerous hills which are mostly subject to slips. It is also pointe,d out that the deviation would open up an area of valuable land,. Traffic will now be diverted through the Buller Gorge, via Reefton.
