WAIUTA NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent]. One of the victims of the recent air crash in Christchurch, Aircraftsman Strachan, was a former well known resident of Waiuta, having been employed at the Blackwater Mines for a considerable time. Deceased was very popular locally, and was an accomplished cornet player, assisting at the dances during his residence here. To his relatives who reside at Roxborough, Otago, is extended the sincere sympathy of his Waiuta friends in their bereavement.

Mr. Les Harvey, left on Monday morning on a holiday visit to Wellington and Otaki. Mr. and Mrs. R. Brown (Waitaki Hydro Works), have been spending a holiday here as the guests of Mrs. Brown’s brother, Constable J. Wilson. The infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Purcell, was severely scalded on Monday evening. The little sufferer is an inmate of the Reefton Hospital. Constable J. Wilson, left for Wellington on Tuesday on annual leave. During his absence, the local station will be in charge of Constable McNeil (Greymouth). The local school resumed on Monday after the Christmas holidays. The annual school excursion will take place at Greymouth on Friday. Busses conveying the children to Ikamatua leave the mine at 7.45 sharp. The committee have all arrangements well in hand for the function. At present very heavy rain is being experienced, and wintry conditions are prevailing. Mr. and Mrs. D. Becker and family, have left on a holiday visit to Wellington. Owing to unfavourable weather, the cricket fixture, Nelson Creek v. Waiuta, at Waiuta, was not played. The fixture will now take place this week-end.

The local branch of the Red Cross held a successful supper dance on Saturday night. Excellent music was supplied by Sullivan’s Dance Band, while Mr. R. Robertson had charge of the floor. Extras were contributed by Messrs E. Faulsham and J. Cook. The monthly meeting of the Red Cross was held in the Club rooms on Thursday evening, Mr. T. R. Hogg presiding over a good attendance of members. Arrangements were made for the ball to be held on Saturday, March 9tl. A deputation was appointed to interview Mr. A. H. McKane at Greymouth on Friday, in connection with the work of the Red Cross.

An attractive programme has been drawn up for the meeting of the Waiuta Sports Club to be held on Saturday, March 9th. Chopping, sawing, and athletic events, as well as an attractive list of children’s events, have been decided on. A further meeting of the committee will be held on Saturday week. Messrs E. French and J. Warring, are visiting Wellington for the Exhibition.
