REEFTON NOTES

I Our Own Col respondent] REEFTON, February 7. The weather continues to. be boisterous and wet, rain falling practically incessantly day and night. So far as the month has gone, it is probably the wettest February on record.

A daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Purcell, of Waiuta, was brought to Reefton Hospital on Monday evening, having been severely scalded through the overturning of a vessel containing boiling, water. The child, who is only a little over a year old, was severely injured,, An employee of the Public Works Department at Inangahua Junction, Mr. Owen Johnston, sustained a broken arm and severe bruising through falling off a bridge on Monday afternoon. He was brought into Reefton Hospital for treatment. The heavy rain on Friday night and Saturday morning caused a stream on( the Crushington-Maruia road to burst its banks, resulting in the scouring and washing away of the road. It was, however, soon repaired. A slip on the road was cleared away so that traffic was able to be resumed on the road on Saturday afternoon.

Before Mr. G. Chisholm, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, Wililam David Blackadder was charged with operating a motorvehicle without a warrant of fitness, and (2) aiding another to drive a motor-vehicle without a motor-driv-er’s license. He was fined 10s with 12s costs on the first charge, and ordered to pay costs 12s on the other. David William Robertson, for operating a motor-vehicle with defective brakes, was fined £2 with costs 10s. Judgment for plaintiff by default was given in the following cases:— Commissioner of Taxes v. W. Prendergast £l5 6s 9d (costs £1 3s Od); L. E. Morgan v. E. J*. Painter £2 2s Od (costs £1 4s 6d). i In a defended action, L. E. Morgan v. E. A. Lemon, claim £lB 5s 9d for solicitor’s costs and disbursements, Mr. Patterson appeared on behalf of defendant and decision was reserved.

Mr. A. B. Archer, Traffic Inspector, Balclutha, is on holiday, which he is spending with his relatives in Reefton.

The following applications were granted by the Warden, Mr. G. G. Chisholm, S.M., at yesterday’s sitting of the Warden’s Court:—Snowy River Gold Dredging. Ltd., for an extension of time for hearing of claim license; James Andrew Davy, for an ordinary prospecting license over 45 acres in Block IV, Mawheraiti S.D., also for leave to amend same; Ernest Cohen, for a residence site license over 1 rood 20 perches in Blk. XI, Reefton S.D. Applications recommended were John Alexander Sutherland, for an ordinary prospecting license over 28 acres in Blk. XII, Reefton S.D.; Nicol James Webster, for an ordinary prospecting license over 100 acres in Blk. XIV, Reefton S.D.; Edwin Arthur Lemon and ors., for consent to transfer of water-race license from Snowy River Sluicing Co., Ltd.
