U.S.A. NAVY OUTLAY

A Big Cut

BY 500 MILLION DOLLARS.

WASHINGTON, January 18.

The Naval Affairs Committee chairman (Mr. Vinson), said that a cut is proposed in the thirteen hundred million dollars' nayal construction, authorisation to eight hundred millions, 'eliminating 34 destroyers, reducing the tonnage of the proposed expansion from 400,000 to 218,000, including three aircraft carriers, 34 submarines, and also an unspecified number of’ cruisers. He is leaving to- the Navy’s discretion, the specific numbers to be built within the authorised tonnage. Mr. Vinson instanced that it would be possible to build four 27,500 cruisers, compared with present ten thousand ton limit. The construction will be divided as follows:—Aircraft carriers, 75,000 tons; cruisers, 110,000; submarines, 33,000. ’ " ' Mr; Vinson said the changes 'wo u’d not restrict -the Navy’s programme. The Navy could not build faster than the new proposals provided. If conditions were similar next year, the balance of the programme would be completed.
