A CONDEMNATION

CANADA’S WAR EFFORT By Ontario Legislature [Aust. & N.Z. Cable Assn.] (Received January 19, 11.50 p.m.) TORONTO, January 18. The Premier of the Province, Mr Michael Hepburn, placed before the Ontario Legislature a motion condemnatory of the Canadian Government’s prosecution of the war, and he announced that he would resign if the motion were defeated. Mr Hepburn, who in the past few weeks has apparently ended a truce in which he had refrained from any attacks on the Federal Government, to which he has long been bitterly opposed, now resumed a running fire on the Federal Government’s war effort

Mr Hepburn alleged that many of the recruits have contracted tuberculosis on account of having insufficient clothing. The Premier generally derided, as being slow and ineffiicient, Canada’s war efforts.

The Conservative leader, Mr George Drew, associated himself with Mr Hepburn’s criticism.

The Provincial Legislature passed the motion by 44 votes to 10. Ten Liberals voted against the motion. ' The Conservatives voted solidly with the remainder of the Liberals in favour of the motion. PRIME MINISTER'S REPLY (Received January 19, 11.45 p.m.) OTTAWA, January 19. Mr MacKenzie King, Prime Minister, announced that he would reply to the Ontario Legislature’s motion in Parliament next week.
