I Our Own Coi respondent] HOKITIKA, January 18. Enlistments on the West Coast for the Forestry Corps to serve oversea continue brisk, numbering to-day 45. The. Forest Department office here whi remain open on Saturday morning from 9 o’clock to 12 o’clock for the receipt of enlistments. The men offering are of a fine stamp and the full quota will soon be obtained. Captain O. J. Hutehison left by this morning’s express for Burnham, to attend a week’s refresher course. Mr R. Styles (Nelson) and Mr J. M. Stewart (Greymouih) are at present visiting Hokitika. Revs. R. P. Andrews and C. S. Knight, of the Anglican Church, who have been in charge of the parish at Hokitika during Rev. D. D. Thorpe’s absence on holiday, left by this morning’s express. Rev. Thorpe is expected to return to Hokitika this evening. rhe latest visitors to Wellington from Hokitika who have signed the oliic.al visitors’ book at the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition, include Mr L. R. Gibb, Mr J. Anderson, Miss Anne Roberts, Mr H. M. Coulson and Mr P. C. Daly. The following will represent the Hokitika Tennis Club in the match with Ross, at Hokitika, on. Saturday: —Miss O. Stapleton, Mrs-Stevenson, Mrs Cowdry, Misses R. Anderson, J. Stevenon, and J. Brice; Messrs Childs, Mandeno, Barnhill, Butland, Dwan and McCarthy. The Minister of Public Works, Hon. R. Semple, who is visiting South Westland, went as far down as the Paringa to-day. He yesterday viewed the position of the Kakapotahi protection work, and erosion at Evans Creek, and also the damage caused by the breax through of the Little Wanganui river. This latter is in a very serious position, the whole, of the water running down; towards La Fontaine Creek. The flood waters extended over a considerable distance of road to below Mr W. Vitiskie’s, on Petersen Road, which is still covered to a depth of two feet. The whole swamp is well covered. Two sawmills on Lower Petersen Road are completely cut off, and the settlers there have to us boats to carry cream to the factory. The pro-1 blem is a serious one. The Minister made a tentative proposal of a four to one subsidy for the work,. which | will be put in hand at once, when approved. The Minister was entertained at a complimentary dinner by the Westland County Council last night, and the proceedings were very hearty and enjoyable. The Ministevial party left this morning for Bruce Bay and Paringa, returning to Webeka in the afternoon.
