A thousand bombs and over’ a thousand heavy shells struck Bjorko, which is the site of the Finnish heavy naval guns guarding the right wing of the Mannerheim Line. i Fighting on the Karelian ..Isthmus was confined to artillery activity. The Finns destroyed the Soviet field headquarters, wiped out two patrols, totalhng eighty men, and halted two Soviet battalions, which were attacking the Isthmus, and. disrupted the supply arid mechanised columns.

(Received J'anuary 17, 7 p.m.) HELSINKI, January 16. A Finnish communique states: — Forces of seventy to eighty Russian planes bombarded the interior towns of Finland to-day. Finnish airmen to-day bombed enemy troops. The Finnish Government has conducted a counter-espionage campaign. This has resulted in the execution of a number of Russian agents. The German Commercial Attache at Helsinki has resigned in order to join the Finnish Army. ALL OPERATIONS. HELD UP BY THE COLD. (Received January 18, 1.43 a.m.) t HELSINKI, January 17. The cold has virtually brought to a standstill the military operations, and has also paralysed naval operations. Soviet Report FINNISH LOSSES IN ATTEMPT TO RECONNOITRE (Received January 18, 1.43 a.m.) LONDON, January 17. A Leningrad communique states: There have been scouting activities at Murmansk and Gregoriev, and clashes of infantry units at Petrozavodsk. There has been minor artillery lire on the Karelian Isthmus. Our patrols have repulsed an enemy attempt to launch reconnoitring operations on a wide front. The enemy suffered great losses. “Our aircraft has made reconnaissances, and has bombed railway junctions and military objectives.
