The Stark Maritime Commission is calling tenders before the end of the month for two 35,000 tons passengerliners primarily for the trans-Paclflc trade, but which could speedily be converted into aircraft carriers, with
700 feet of flying-decks ana accommodation for 75 planes. The funnel arrangement is similar to that of aircraft carriers, and the speed is over 30 knots. The gun emplacements, permitting arming, are.
isimliar to most modern carriers. The I vessels, which' are described as w;uI ships earning maintenance in /peacetime, will be Operated by the Presi--1 dent Lines, and will be the most luxuriously fitted ships seen in the Pacific.
