RECRUITING CAMPAIGN

GREY ENLISTMENTS Total Now 324 Five further recruits yesterday j brought the effective total enlist-1 ments at Greymouth to 324. The number of new recruits is considered fairly, satisfactory, in view of the fact that the intensive campaign for Greymouth during the next week was not inaugurated until yesterday A brief address was given through the loud speaker system at Victoria Park by Colonel C. E. Butcher, and a recruiting office was open at the park. Although numerous enquiries were received by the recruiting officer present, no actual enlistments were made on the Trotting Grounds. The effort is considered most satisfactory, however, as a good number of the enquirers indicated that they proposed to enlist at the Defence Office.

Last evening, speakers at both theatres made vigorous appeals for enlistments, and were accorded warm receptions in both cases. Similar addresses will be delivered at the Opera House and Regent Theatre this evening by Brigadier-General W. Meldrum and Captain R. Curtis, M.C. In addition, arrangements are being made for speakers to address theatre audiences at Hokitika and Runanga. Recruiting offices are being opened at all theatres to enable young men to enlist. Keen interest is being taken in the campaign, and although nearly 60 men are still required, the Army authorities are confident that this number will be reached before January 12, which is the date by which 10.000 enlistments are required in the Dominion.

YESTERDAY’S ENLISTMENTS Yesterday’s enlistments at. Army headquarters are as follows:— Thomson, Raymond Thomas, Nelson Quay, Cobden. Gillanders, Archibald Seaforth, Koiterangi. How to Enlist Enlistments can be made at the Defence Office, Lord Street, almost opposite the Albert Street railway crossing. To-day at Victoria Park a recruiting officer will be in attendance at a stand on one of the lawns to accept enlistments and answer enquiries. Enlistments may be made on enquiry from recruiting officers at the stands in the lounges of both the Regent Theatre and Opera House. Country residents are reminded that enlistment forms are procurable at ail post offices and railway stations.
