CHRISTCHURCH, January 2. Rain delayed the start of the junior inter-provincial cricket tournament. Continuing the Canterbury innings in reply to Wellington’s 154, Canterbury scored 189 for seven wickets. Replying to Auckland, 305, Otago made 234 for seven wickets. HAMILTON, January 1. In spite of losing three wickets for 86 runs, Waikato, under ideal conditions, compiled 391 runs in the first day of its Hawke Cup match against Poverty Bay. In a fourth-wicket partnership of 151, W. Lyon and J. Everest changed the fortunes of the game, Lyon scoring 125 and Everest 92. P.j Jordan also batted well for 49, and A. Lissette was 35.
SHEFFIELD SHIELD (Received January 2, 11.45 p.m.) MELBOURNE, January 2. In the Sheffield Shield . cricket match to-day, Victoria in the second innings scored 313. Barnett made 46, Hassett 66, and Ring (not out) 41. In the bowling f Klose took 3 for 43, Grimmett 2 for 79, Ward 3 for 102. South Australia in the second innings lost 1 for 60. South Australia won on the first innings by 135 runs.
