Mr R. V. Trcwern leaves to-day on return to Nelson. Lieutenant L. Leslie, of Hokitika, leaves to-day on return to Burnham. Mrs W. A. Preston leaves this morning on a holiday visit to Invercargill and Queenstown. Mr. and Mrs. W. Jones, DunolK >, have returned' after a holiday visit to Christchurch. Mr J. Leslie left last evening for Christchurch after a visit to Hokitika. Mr and Mrs G. M. Casey, of Auckland, are visiting their son, Mr B. Casey, of Blackmore Street. Mr Jtistice Northcroft left yesterday for Christchurch after a visit to Hokitika.
Mrs E. McDonald, of Kumara, left yesterday by ’plane for Wellington, on a visit to l er daughter, Mrs G. fiittle.
A Sydney cablegram announced the death of Herbert Stanley Dettmann, formerly Professor of Classics, Auckland University College.
The engagement is announced of lan, youngeist son of Mr and Mrs Geo. Williams, Dunedin, and Joyce, daughter of Mr and Mrs R. Knox, Wellington.
Sir Frank Benson the founder -yf a famous Shakesperian company, which appeared in most parts of the world, an actor of distinction producer and inspircr of many great actors and actresses, has died in Loudbn, aged 81.

Mr D. F. Mursell, District Manager of the. A.M.P. Society, wyho leaves tomorrow on transfer to Wanganui, was farewelle’d by the Greymouth staff and presented with a’ whisky decanter and set. The presentation vfas made by Mr J. Hood, who, on behalf of those present, wished Mr Mursell happiness and success in his new district'. '
Prior to his departure yesterdayon return to Burnham Camp, Captain E. Caldwell was met by the Greymouth Post and Telegraph Staff and presented with a wallet of notes, fbr the purchase of an officer’s travelling trunk. The presentation was riiade by the Chief Postmaster, (Mr C. W. Browne) who wished Captain Caldwell success in his military duties and a safe Other speakers who added their good wishes were Messrs J. W. S’’ Shrimpton (accountant), C. T. Ta'ssell (Telegraph Branch), M. K. B. Sheard (Clerical Branch),’ and Miss Hill (Money Order Branch).
The death oi a pioneer resident of the Grey Valley, Mrs Kate Darcy, occurred yesterday morning at the residence of her daughter, Mrs M. Connors, Harper Street, Blackball, .at the age of 86 years. ' Deceased, who was a native of County Galway Ireland, resided for many years ’ at Ahaura and Callaghan’s Creek, but for the past 15 years she had lived in Blackball. Her husband Richard parcy, died 13 years ago, and she is survived by one daughter, Mrs Connors and seven grandchildren. The funeral will take place at Ahaura Cemetery to-day, following Requiem Mass at St. Mary’s Church, Ahaura.
