BIG DEMONSTRATION
At Stratford Races COMEDY OVER PLACINGS. NEW PLYMOUTH, January 2. The biggest demonstration ever ;een on a racecourse in Taranaki occurred at Stratford to-day after tne Toko Highweight Handicap had been -un. A large crowd gathered round ;he judge’s box and protested against he decision given by the judge, Mr. 2. H. Washer, and the crowd .did not disperse until three changes in the lumbers had been made. In an exciting finish, Te Hat ano Prince Rangi passed the post together, with Tosh just heading Gay Seton. Vhen the numbers went up Te Hai’s was missing, and his supporters began to surge to the judge’s box. The corrected numbers then showed Te Rai as third, and the protest continued. Then the numbers were lowered and hoisted again, and Prince Rangi was not placed. As Prince Rangi was the favourite, the crowd grew larger, till two officials of the elub entered the box, and the numbers were then hoisted for the fourth ime, showing a dead-heat between Prince Rangi and Te Hai, with Tosh third and Gay Seton fourth.
