YOUNG MAN DROWNED

IN RESCUE OPERATIONS. AUCKLAND, December 26. The body of a young man, who disappeared in the course of rescue operations on Christmas Day at Orewa Beach, was discovered to-day lying among rocks on the south side of the mouth of the Orewa River. He was Jack Bradshaw Johnston, aged 23 years, single, of Sandringham.. Deceased was bathing on Christmas-Day with his sister, Betty Johnston, and a young woman companion. The young women were using a Lilo mat and air cushion, and were about waist deep in the water at the mouth of the river, when they got out of their depth, and were carried seawards. Some men went to their rescue, and brought them in to shallow water. Then it was noticed that Johnston was missing. It is believed that he was drowned in attempting to retrieve the Lilo mat.
