Killed at Wanganui

Two motor cars co ii o:i the Wanganui-Levin h'ghway. 51 mi'es south of Wanganui, a' 8.15 on Saturday night, and Miss Elizabeth Eagle, aged 47 years, Supoivisor oi' fie Wanganui Telephone Exchang , was killed. Miss Eagle finished duiv at ’? Exchange at 8 o'clock on Satur ■ ' night, and joined her brother, Mr John Eagle, Assistant Srrci\ sor of lhe Post and Telegiaph D. pr.rtment, Clerical Branch, at Pa mcistoa North, who had come to Wainmnu’ to drive her to Palmerston North for the week-end. He was driving a light car. When opposite “Marangai,” lhe homestead of Alan Cameron, Eagle s car was close in the rear of a taxicar, driven by W. Halligan, and cn route to Whangaehu and ivutana. A iproaching from the dTection of Wangaehu was a rental car, driven by S. Head, of Pitt Street, Wanganui, homeward bound from the races at Trentham. The taxi passed Head’s car, but a collision occurred between the car driven by Eagle and the homecoming' rental vehicle. Eagle’s car travelled some distance and struck a slight bank and slewed round. Miss Eagle apparently was thrown out on to the bitumen. Her skuu was crushed and she d ed almost instantaneously. Her brother suffered from shock. There were five neop e in the rental car driven by Read. None of them was injured. Miss Eagle was born at St. Ba!llan’s, Otago, and came to Wanganui about 4 years ago from New Plymouth. She had served in several, exchanges in the Dominion and was a very popular officer.
SERVICE CAR OVERTURNS.
CARTERTON, October 20.
As a result of a service car capsizing on the main road from Greytown to Carterton at daybreak this morning, a passenger, Mr Owen Casey, 20, Jessie Street. Wellington, was admitted to the Masterton Hospital with injuries to a shoulder. His condition is not serious.
Two women passengers were not injured, suffering only slight shock. The driver, Mr Leslie Burt, alleged that he was forced off the road by a small car on the wrong side. The service car travelled along the grass for some distance, broadsided, and turned over. The other car did not stop. Casey was pinned under the car, which had to be jacked up before he could be released.
