HOKITIKA NOTES
(Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, October 14. Many were attracted to the country by the excellent weather over the week-end. A motor collision occurred last n ght at the intersection of Weld and Brittan Streets, shortly after 6.30, between a lorry belonging to the Westland Co-operative Dairy Coy., and a Chevrolet sedan car, The car, which Miss Fleming, of Kokatahi was driving, was struck in the middle, as it was travelling towards Gibson Quay, and pushed some yards by the impact, the side being stove in, mudguards dented, and a window broken. The lorry had the radiator and front mudguards dented. Mr Fleming, who with another passenger, was in the rear seat of the car, suffered shock, but the others escaped injury. . The lorry was driven by-Mr Oscar Olson, and the sun was at the time in an awkward position. The hearing of the charge against John Francis Patterson, of assaulting William Janies Gannon, at Ross, on October 3, and with robbing him of £l4 will come up for hearing on Wednesday morning next and will be heard by two Justices.
A very pleasant evening was spent in the Woodstock Hall last evening, when the residents of Rimu and Woodstock gathered together to bid farewell to Mr S. McCormack and Mr W Bovd o.' i r departure for camp. Mr H. Reid and Miss L. Morris supplied the music for the dancing. Miss C. Knowles played extras. Items were rendered by Miss L. Morris, Miss D. Stephens, Messrs J. Nancekivell, W. Muir, A. Thorpe, J. Keenan and R. Ellis. In a few well-chosen words, Mr W. Willoughby, on behalf of the residents congratulated the boys on their offer to serve, then presented them with a cheque each. The boys suitably replied. Mr D. J. Evans has gone to Wellington on business in connection with the West Coast representation at the Centennial Exhibition. He was accompanied by Mrs R. J. Appleton. An elderly resident of .Fitzherbert Street, Hyla D. McDonald, was admitted to the hosptial, suffering from the effect of injuries, said to have been sustained in a fracas on Friday evening in upper Gibson Quay. Some time after about 6 o’clock McDonald was seen to stumble and fall in the vicinity of Livingstone Street, with his wrist badly cut. It is reported that he was struck with a bottle. At the same time a hut occupied and owned by White was found to be on fire and with its contents was completely destroyed. White at this time was down town and did not . arrive until the hut was practically destroyed. It is understood the matter is the subject of police investigation.
