In the second debate for the Stuart Cup, held at Hokitika last evening, the St. Mary’s junior team was successful against St. Columba (Greymouth) by four points. The subject was “That the Modern Girl is an Improvement on her Predecessor.” The judge, Mr H. M. Coulson, awarded the following points: St. Columba (affirmative): Messrs G. D. Fogarty 80 (reply 18), C. E. Heaphy 80, T. O’Farrell 85; total 263. St. Mary’s (negative), Messrs T. Keown 82 (reply 15), F. Ballinger 85, O. Dwan 85, total 267. Mr Coulson gave a valuable criticism of the speakers, who were later the guests of St. Mary’s club at supper. On the motion’of Rev. Dr. G. Harrison, a hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr Coulson.
