HOKITIKA, September 20. | At the Westland County meeting yesterday there were present, Mrs. J. A. Murdoch (.chairman), G. Rowley, W. Searle, T. P. O’Neil, B. Ward, J. Donovan, P. J. McLean, A. Dale and W. A. Jamieson. The chairman and engineer were appointed to report on a request by Mr C. Mills for protection work at Kanieri Forks. The District Engineer advised it had been decided not to proceed with the landing ground at Okarito, and returning the deposit of. £5O. Mr J. O’Brien, M.P., advised that this matter would be looked into, lhe engineer also advised that he had no information regarding a landing ground at Harihari. The matter was referred to the Member for the District. The engineer advised that additional work on Turnbull Road, South Westland, has been deterred, and that if a ferryman were ap-* pointed at Waitoto River the subsidy could not be increased. The engineer suggested the use of a bulldozer tor protection work at Kakapotahi River, South Westland. The Marine Department stated the signalman s salary at Okuru would be increased, the extra cost to be paid by tire Public Works Department. Crs. O’Neil and Jamieson were appointed to advise the Inspector of Stock, on ragwort eradication. It was decided to refuse the request of South M estland Estates Ltd., regarding access to Okarito wharm with a new direct road to enable the area to be granted to the company on the motion of the chairman and Cr Donovan. rvT>. i O’Brien M.P., advised that an

application had been made tor a grant for Waitaha road; also that Dorothy Falls road was not considered a settlement road also that a deputation re South Westland railway should be deferred till next year. Mr C. Macfarlane advised that owing to his departure from the district he could no longer act as land valuer. It was decided to take no action re bridging Whale Road, Wataroa. it was decided that the engineer report re using portion of , vote J or Waitangi-Roto road. Mr J.. O Brie MP. advised of a grant of £5OO ire for this road. The tender of J. McPherson at £53, for Turnbull Road, was accepted. The Lands Department forwarded plans for consent to closing portion Ross Road covered by new deviations, which were approved. It was decided to spend £25 on a footbridge over Peterson track extension for ‘ * Woodham, on the motion of Crs. Me Lean and Donovan. Accounts totalling £3780 were passed for payment. A grant of £2O to extend Buhch road Mahitahi was made on the motion of Crs Donovan and Searle. Five eathenware pipes were put in Brit.tan Street drain at the intersection of Hampden Street, and six 18-inch concrete pipes were put in across Hoffman Street, leading into Mr Mcßae’s residence. Water services were renewed at Mr Laurensen’s in Bealey Street and three repaired at Mr Schroe dec’s and Mr Raine’s, in Revel Street, and Mr F. Andrews’ in Livingstone ,Street, and two days were spent repairing on the Lake line. The average depth of water in the reservoir for the month was nine feet, nine inches.
