IMPORT CONTROL
More Raw Materials Needed AUCKLAND, September 18. The need for a revision of manufacturers’ licences for the importation of raw materials was emphasised at a meeting of the executive of the Auckland Manufacturers’ Association. It was stated that after the outbreak of war the system had been upset, and with many licences valueless they needed to be revised by changes of venue and of value. “It has immediately become apparent that in certain cases the holders of licences to import, materials from the United Kingdom may now not be able to obtain them, and may require a transfer to other countries,” said a letter from Mr M. R^,.O’Shea, secretary of the New Zealand Manufacturers’ Federation. “The Reserve Bank states that no action has yet been taken t 0 facilitate these. I am taking steps to have the matter* taken up immediately.” Mr O’Shea added that in the meantime if an importer desired to transfer he must first apply to the Customs Department for permission, and then through his trading bank to the Reserve Bank. It was stated that many licences were of no value, became of price increases in the United Kingdom on account of war conditions. The Government would have to make provision for these factors at an early date.
