MUSSOLINI’S PLAN
For Peace Conference BRITISH VETO KILLS IT. LONDON. September 4. It is emphasised that Italy, used the utmost, efforts to reach a peaceful solution. Failing this, it is added, Italy’s best contribution is to help to circumscribe the conflict bv not joinin'?. Her attitude is one of strict neutrality. The Danish Press says that Sigrior Mussolini’s compromise is naturally unacceptable to England and France. The "Hamburger Fremdenblatt” says that Signor Mussolini’s proposals were • — (1) An immediate cessation of til Hies, the respective troops in Poland tot maintain their positions. (2) The summoning Immediately of a five-Power conference. Germany accepted the proposals, and France agreed in principle, but Britain torpedoed the proposal, at tne twelfth hour. It is stated that Italy expects France and Britain to continue normal relations, despite the Italo-Ger-man military alliance. Italian liners are resuming their sailings in a few days, indicating Italy’s determination to observe neutrality. Egypt has taken precautions to ensure that enemv action shall not hinder the use of the Suez Canal by merchant shipping.
