WRESTLING

McCready v. jones. Greymouth wrestling enthusiasts will be glad of the opportunity on Friday, September 8, of renewing their acquaintance with Earl McCready, British Empire heavyweight wrestling champion, who stands higher than ever this year in the regard of all New Zealand followers of the sport. McCready’s appearance will be all the .more welcome because he will be matched with Paul Jones, an experienced wrestler of high standing, who can be depended upon to make McCready go his hardest. As McCready is now well on the way to a century and a-half of matches in this country, his special qualities, which he demonstrated every time he enters the ring, are fully recognised and only an opponent of exceptional qualifications can expect to stand up to him. This is the fourth season in which he has been at the head of the wrestlers competing in this country and when a better all-round wrestler than McCready arrives New Zealanders will be glad to learn of it. Jones has reached the prominence which has been his in world wrestling for the past ten years only because he has never stopped endeavouring to perfect his wrestling, and his success has also been largely due to the manner in which he has mastered his specialty, the hook scissors hold. Although many other wrestlers have tried this grip because of its effectiveness when properly applied, no others have been able to equal Jones’s use of it and , once he has applied it there is no es- ' cape unless the victim manages to edge his way under the ropes or find some other subterfuge. McCready may be too shrewd to allow Jones to catch him with the hold, but, in that case, Jones has plenty of other measures to draw upon and he is nothing if not versatile. He is also prone to adopt rugged measures a id can use a wicked elbow jolt calculated to shake the toughest of opponents.
