BOXING
West Coast Championships PROMISING TALENT DISPLAYED. Some promising talent, the best in recent years, was shown by West Coast amateur’ boxers at the West Coast Amateur Boxing Championships, conducted by the Greymouth Boxing and Wrestling Association at the Greymouth Town Hall on Saturday night. There was a good attendance, though it would undoubtedly have been greater had enthusiasts been aware that such a fine bill of fare would be provided. The tournament was well conducted and reflected every credit on the officials concerned. The referees were Messrs F. O’Neill. N. Kiely and F. Belt. The new title-holders are:— I CHAMPIONSHIP. j Fly-weight: J. Campbell (Runanga).' Bantam-weight: T. Hoggarth (Brunner). Featherweight: W. Clark (Brun-, ner). I Light-weight: W. Clark (Brunner). Welter-weight: E. Rochford (Greymouth), Middle-weight: W. Downes (South Westland). Light-heavyweight; P. Marsh 'Ruru). ‘ Heavyweight: C. Marsh (Grey mouth).
NOVICE. Feather-weight: A. Cowan 'Brun ner). Light-weight: S. Evans (Grey mouth). Following are the results, with brief comments attached:— Flyweight: (final): J. Campbell (Runanga) 7.12, defeated E. Foote (Christchurch) 7.12. Foote had the advantage in the opening round, scoring with a solid right. He weakened somewhat in the two last rounds, and Campbell scored frequently at close range to earn the decision.
■ Bantamweight (final): T. Hoggarth (Brunner) 8.2, defeated E. Foote (Christchurch) 7.12. by a technical knock-out in the first half minute. Hoggarth quickly scored with powerful rights to the face, flooring Foote, who could not continue. Hoggarth is a fine type of boxer, who should more than hold his own at the New Zealand Championships. He will, however, require to make more use of his left hand. Featherweight: W. Clark (Brunner) won by default from D. McGirr (Christchurch). Lightweight: G. Hawes (South Westland) 9.5, de-1 feated I. Watson (Christchurch) 9.6,1 on points. It was a very? even contest, and although Watson was the more experienced of the pair, he tired quickly, and Hawes just got the decision. Hawes injured his thumb, and defaulted to W. Clark (Brunner) in the final. Welterweight;
E. Tolhurst (Brunner) 10.6, defeated J. Quinn (Blackball) L 0.4, on a technical knock-out in the first round. Tolhurst displayed his anility, scoring off his more youthful opponent with both hands, and sending him to the canvas. A Partridge (Greymouth) 10.6, defeated N. Harris (Hokitina) 10.3 i. It was a fairly even contest, with Partridge the more rugged of the pair, and he lasted it out the best. There was some lively in-fighting and Partridge came out of it on top by a fair margin. Semi-final: I E. Rochford (Greymouth) 10.6, de- 1
I feated E. Tolhurst on a technical ! knock-out in the first round. Tt was stated that Tolhurst had an~*attack of dizziness an c j could not continue. Final: E. Rochford defeated A. Partridge on points. It. was a sterling fight, with Rochford the aggressor. He scored with well-directed rights and lefts to the face, and floored his opponent in the first round as the gong sounded. The two remaining rounds provided plenty of interest, but Rochford scored more often witn; speedy blows. Partridge gave a verygame exhibition against a more experienced opponent.
Middleweight (final): W. Downes (South Westland) 11.6, defeated R. Moth (Brunner) 10.9 in the only? contest in this division. Well over six feet, and havin'- an enormous advantage in reach, the lanky? Southerner fought solidly, giving Moth no quarter and scoring well with left and rights.
Light-heavyweight: P. Marsh (Ruru) 12.5, defeated F. Griffen (Greymouth) 12.0. Marsh scored convincingly in the first two rounds, but his more youthful opponent effectively used a straight left in the final round, and Marsh did not then have matters too much his own way. .. .. .. Final:
P. Marsh got the decision over Lew Foy (Greymouth) 11.101, in the final, but the decision was received in bad taste by? a large number of the spectators. A very rugged type of fighter, Lew Foy gave his opponent no quarter, and scored close in. He several times infringed the rules by fouls and his failure to break cleanly, but was always the aggressor, and should have got the decision.
Heavyweight: C. Marsh (Greymouth) won by default from F. Hill. NOVICE CLASS. In the final of the featherweight class. A. Cowan -(Dobson) 8.5, defeated L. O’Brien (Dobson), 8.7. It was a very even contest, but Cowan appeared to just have the edge on his opponent throughout.
Leight-weight: (■ R. Nelson (Greymouth) 9.6, defeat- [• cd R. Kiely (Greymouth) 9.4, on I points. It was a good bout, with 1 several lively exchanges. Nelson gave a more polished exhibition, and even though Kiely forced the issue, . he had a good margin of points. Kiely ’ undoubtedly lacked form. S. Evans (Greymouth) 95, defeated I. Baker (Greymouth) 9.71. This was also a very even contest between two promising boys, and Evans got the verdict after an extra round had been fought. In the extra round, Evans scored freely to gain the verdict. ( In order to win in the final, Evans | had t o fight an extra round with R. I Nelson. It was not until the third round that Nelson began to show lus superiority in boxing ability, finding difficulty in dealing with the Jong reach of his opponent. Nelson lasted it out better in the extra round and outboxed Evans, but Evans was awarded the verdict.
