N.Z. TOURNEY ENDS Coast Lose Narrowly [Per Press Association]. INVARCARGILL, August 27. The New Zealand basketball tournament concluded at Invercargill yesterday in fine weather. Auckland and Wellington tied for first place in the first grade and thus jointly hold the New Zealand Cup. Southland retained the Annie Brown Cup. South Canterbury was unbeaten in the second grade section and third grade honours went to Wanganui. At the beginning of the day Southland, Wellington and Auckland were equal in the senior section. Wellington had an easy win over Canterbury and Auckland played brilliantly to beat Southland. The following are the trophy winners:— First Grade (New Zealand Cup): Wellington and Auckland. Annie Brown Cup: Southland. Second Grade (President’s Shield): South Canterbury. Hayhurst Cup: Waikato. Third Grade (Kiwi Trophy). Wanganui. Armstrong Shield: West Coast. Saturday’s results are:—

First Grade. Hawke’s Bay 18 v. Otago 10. Auckland 13 v. Southland 7. Wellington 17 v. Canterburj' 8. Second Grade. Waikato 7 v. Manawatu 4. Ashburton 12 v. Wairarapa 10.. Third Girade. Wanganui 10 v. West Coast 7. Temuka 20 v. Otago Minor 12. The inter-island game resulted: — South Island 16; North Island 8. The teams were:— I South Island.—D. Amads, L. Scott, i D. McCauslin, E. Sinclair, J. McLean | (Otago), M. McGrath, E. Neame, B. Ingram (Southland), D. Strachan I (South Canterbury), C. Swan, M. Scott and J. Millard (Canterbury). I North Island.—M. Tangye, I. Johns, A. Boughtwood, M. Everton, H. Hirst (Auckland), M. Jenkins, J. Wilson, 1. Williams, V. Stone, M. Howe (Wellington), R. Butcher and A. Strandbeck (Hawke’s Bay). | South’s first goal was scored by D. Strachan. D. Adams shot the second ' goal. North then scored after the ball had travelled from end to end. South combined well in all thirds. D. Strachan’s field work was excellent. South then led 6-3. M. Tangye retired at half-time when the score was: South 8, North 4. / In the second spell North had more combination, but South were victorious by 16-8. The positions of the teams at the conclusion of play was as follows:— First Grade: Auckland 8, Wellington 8 Southland 6, Canterbury 4, Otago 2, Hawke’s Bay 2. Second Grade: South Canterbury 10, Waikato 6, Ashburton 4, Manawatu 4, Southland Minor 4, Wairarapa 2. Third Grade: Wanganui 8, West Coast 6, Temuka 4, Hokitika 2, Otago Minor 0.
