Timber Merchant’s Federation. The matter had been the subject of discussion at several meetings held for the purpose, as a result of which'representations had been made to the Minister. As a result of these meetings it haa been possible to secure some modification of the - Governments original intentions, and the necessity to avoid having to install an unwarrantedly large number of kilns had been made clear. Additional. kilns had already been installed, and it was hoped that the Government was now satisfied that facilities for an adequate supply of keln-dndd timber for State houses were fast being provided. -• ' .

While being driven from Invercargill back to Otaitai Bush, by way of the Waimatuku Beach, a lorry by Mr A. Templeton, flax miller, ,‘of Otaitai Bush, was completely engulfed in quicksand. The mishap (says the Southland Times) took place near the New River ferry. Although the lorry was drawn under in a very short time, the driver was able to make ,his escape without injury. Usually the sand on the beach is quite firm, Mt occasionally, often after wet vVeather or during floods, quicksands develop without warning. In this case, Mr Templeton’s lorry edrlier in the flay had passed safely over the same spot. Efforts are to be made to recover "the lorry but it is feared that the Vehicle' may be a total loss. . Some time ago, another vehicle belonging to . the flax mill was trapped by quicksand, but later was recovered. An bld resident states that about 20 years ago a horse team and express were completely engulfed without leaving a trace of their whereabouts.
