HOKITIKA COMPLAINT

[To the Editor.]

Sir, —The Borough Council of Hokitika, I understand, are to construct ornamental gates at Cass Square and also swimming baths. They would, I think, be doing a better thing on the occasion of the Centennial if, like other towns, while men and money are available, they cleaned up the borough, surfaced the roads and footpaths properly, and cleaned and drained some of their reserves, which are yet swamps and moving bogs. New swimming baths are not needed, the present ones being adequate. If the baths are not big enough for somej people, .there are in the Hokitika roads plenty of potholes to dive into which the only things required are springboards. Even bitumen reading has been started and left unfinished, as in Hampden Street. It might be a good suggestion that the Mayor and Councillors visit Westport and see i how subsidy money can be used to make roads and footpaths; or that the Mayor of Westport be asked to come and teach our Councillors how to do it. I am, etc., Hokitika, August 8. “SPRINGBOARD,”
