portant causes, Mr Davis has been dis erectly silent about them, no doubt realising that the fault lies nearer home. I suggest that he give the number of man-shifts lost per year from the following causes:— “1. Idle days because of no oij “2. Shipping not promptly available at Greymouth and Westport. , “3. Shortage of railway trucks. “4. Breakdowns of colliery plants, “5 Underground fires, accumula- ’ tion of gas, falls of roof, floods. “6. Obsolete and' inadequate underground haulage systems. “These (not listed in order of magnitude) are the causes of at leas . 80 ner cent, of the loss of potential production. The miners are not responsible for any one of them. To say that the miners are ‘solely responsible for the shortage’ is just plain nonsense, and to say that ‘there is no solution in sight’ is to admit that one is not. qualified to have a voice in the direction of the industry. There is a so ution for the problems of the coal mining industry, but its adoption will be fought tooth and nail by Mr Davis and g other capitalist Bourbons who have ‘learned nothing and forgotten nothing.’

WHO WORKS ? “It would have been better had Mr Davis not tried to brand the miners as ‘won’t works.’ The average miner could truthfully reply that he does more work in a month than the average mine owner does in a lifetime. The miner works as hard as any ma,i in New Zealand, and harder than most. He works eight hours a day underground, in constant danger, and in an atmosphere vitiated by mine gases and the fumes of high explosives The International Labour Organisation of the League of Nations has been trying to bring about a shorter working dav for miners, and a shorter working day has actually been introduced in some countries, and could well be introduced in New Zealand. The miner can look society squarely in the face and say ‘I, am giving more than lam receiving. Lt all men could do that, this world would be a much better place to live in.” ,y-
