The Westland Hospital Board forwarded copy of the Board’s receipts and payments for the year ended 31/3/39 ) and estimated receipts and payments for. the year ending 31/3/1940 as adopted by the Board. The Automobile Association, - Westland branch, asked that the i Council confer with the Westland ) County Council, with a view to dealing s with the turn-outs on the Hokitika - bridge, and in the same matter, the - Westand County Council forwarded / particulars of a meeting of represen-

tatives will be held to decide on a course of action. The Beautifying Association wrote, suggesting that the Council lix the permanent widths of carriage-ways and footpaths, thus leaving a fixed width for the roadside lawns which many residents are now constructing on their frontages. The object is to ensure that the edges of all lawns shall be in straight lines, and a member of the Association, who is a registered surveyor, has undertaken to give the necessary alignment to control the lay-out. The Association is prepared, if the Council agrees, to consider each street in turn, and forward recommendations to the Council for their concurrence. The request was agreed to, work on Sale Street to be carried out. William Johnson, applied for street stand to park a piecart, on a site to be stated by the Council, but preferably at Truman's corner, Weld and Tancred Streets.— Granted. The Secretary of the Municipal Association of New Zealand wrote, stating that the Executive Committee considered it unwise to request the Government to draft all local body by-laws, and pointing out that model building by-laws are already under consideration by the Standards Institute, parts I—6 of which ' are already in print, and that the Association is endeavouring to arrange lor the Government Printing Office to retain the type of these model bylaws, so that they may be made available, with necessary alterations, for any local body desiring to adopt them. It is the intention of the Institute! to •forward sample copies of these bylaws to all local bodies as soon as they arc printed. The Royal Humane Sociciy of New* Zealand made its annual appeal for guinea granted. The officer in charge of the Valuation Department, Christchurch, forwarded the revised valuation roll for the Hokitika Borough, and asked that the roll be available for public inspection during business hours from the date of receipt (10th. inst.) until the 24th. inst., both dates inclusive,

and further stating that “the Department has hitherto, when supplying local rolls, furnished gross and rateable totals. As the responsibility of the interpretation of the term ‘rateable property’ in the Rating Act is imposed upon the local authority, I shall te glad if you will check those entries marked exempt, and say also if any property exempt from local rating has not been so marked. —Referred to the Mayor and Town Clerk. Cr. A. R. Elcock and Mr W. Baddon were re-ap-pointed to the Fire Board. Permission to instal septic tanks was granted C. Caliari and M. Houston, junr.
