Mr J. O’Brien, MP. leaves to-day for Christchurch, in order to be present at the funeral of the late Mr I'J. Howard M.P. Mr and Mrs V. J. Meates left last evening on return to Wellington. Mr and Mrs J. Keller, left last evening for Christchurch. Miss Sherriff of Hokitika, returned by the Awatea this week from Sydney after a holiday trip. Miss Ida McDonald, Blaketown Is progressing satisfactorily at the Gtey Hospital, after a recent operation fnr appcndicitus. ■ The Duke and Duchess of Windsor are going to Paris, states an Antibes message. They have decided to postpone their proposed visit to North Africa. Passengers by Cook Strait Airways West Coast service yesterday were: Nelson-Greymouth, Mr E. Bardsley, Mr W. Thompson; Greymouth-Nelson. Miss Cowper, Mr J. Callwell. A vote of condolence was passed with Mr N. W Jones, a former Secretary and a life member of the West Coast Rugby Union at its meeting last evening, in the death of his mother. Messrs A. W. Mulligan, general secretary of the Centennial Branch of the Department of Internal Affairs, and E. M. Bardsley, secretary of the Dominion Court at the Centennial Exhibition, who have been visiting Greymouth, leave this morning on return to Wellington. Guests at Revington's Hotel include: Mrs H. Bayliss (London), Mr K< Zimmerman (Kobe, Japan), Mr E. RJames (Bulawayo, South Rhodesia), Mr J. B. Reid (Wellington), Mr J. A. Wright, Mr D. Reese, Mr R. E. Alexander, Mr C. Tansey, Mr A. J. Brownlie (Christchurch), Miss M. M. Stevenson (Franz Josef Glacier), Mr R. V. Peace (Christchurch), Mr J. F. Coombs (Wellington).
Prior to last evening’s meeting of the Management Committee of the West Coast Rugby League, Mr W. Barlow, who recently retired after many years’ service as a member of the committee, was met and presented with a smoker’s companion suitably inscribed. The President (Mr P. Blanchfield) said that all recognised the great value of the services of Mr Barlow, who had,been one of the stalwarts of the code. He regretted that advancing age and ill health compelled him to severe his active connection with the game, and desired to express in a tangible mannm their appreciation of his services. Mr A. H. McKane, said that Mr Barlow did not require any memento to remind him of his association with the code, but he was pleased that the management committee had decided to make a presentation. He paid a warm tribute to Mr Barlow’s work. Messrs A. Fielding, W. Hopkins, b. Rathbun, A. Kyle, J. Stokes, J. Kidd and J. Anisy also spoke expressing thanks to Mr Barlow for his work, and Mr Barlow returned thanks • for the presentation and the good wishes that accompanied it. ,
